IWLA Promotes Supply Chain Solutions in Open Letter to President Biden

In an open letter to President Biden, IWLA and a host of other supply chain stakeholders called on the Biden Administration to take the following specific actions to address supply chain disruptions:

Implement a young driver pilot program, such as the one outlined in the DRIVE Safe Act, that would allow 18 to 20 year old CMV-licensed drivers to operate in interstate commerce following their successful participation in a rigorous, safety-first apprenticeship designed to promote careers in trucking and address the nation’s driver shortage.

Partner federal agencies, specifically the Departments of Transportation and Labor, with industry and state and local governments to promote transportation and supply chain occupations to improve employment opportunities and boost the economy.

Provide vaccine mandate flexibility. It’s estimated that companies covered by the mandate could lose up to 37% of their driver workforce. Vaccine mandates for transportation and supply chain workers will exacerbate supply chain disruption and the driver shortage.

Support regulatory flexibility in hours-of-service rules, especially during emergencies. Commercial truck drivers should be given greater flexibility to ensure the timely delivery of essential goods.

Continue working with industry and supply chain stakeholders to investigate inefficiencies at our ports and establish operational practices that will improve the movement of cargo through the supply chain.
