DOL Announces Initiative to Safeguard Warehouse and Logistics Workforce

Citing industry strain from increased demand and global supply chain constraints, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced a new Warehouse and Logistics Worker initiative designed to ensure industry workers are protected.

The initiative will specifically seek to ensure industry workers are paid their legal wages, including minimum and overtime; safe from harassment and retaliation for claiming workplace rights; and not prevented from taking time off as afforded by the Family and Medical Leave Act. The initiative will also target industry for employee misclassification issues.

According to the announcement, the Wage and Hour Division led initiative will use “education, outreach and vigorous enforcement to increase compliance and reduce violations.” Employers and employer organizations, worker advocacy groups, and other stakeholders will help the agency to ensure the initiative is effective.

IWLA is closely following the developments of this newly announced initiative. For additional information on how the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) applies to the warehousing industry, please see Fact Sheet #10.
