Walsh Confirmed as Labor Secretary
March 23 former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was sworn in as the 29th Secretary of Labor after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Walsh’s nomination to head up the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) was confirmed by a bipartisan 68–29 vote, with 18 Republicans voting in favor of confirmation.
Walsh is a former union president (Boston Building and Construction Trades Council), whose nomination was broadly supported by organized labor.
The DOL has been active already in working to rescind and revise regulations promulgated under the Trump Administration. Secretary Walsh is expected to continue furthering DOL efforts to recalibrate labor-related rules to resemble the status quo under the Obama Administration.
Of note, DOL’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has yet to act on a COVID-19 emergency temporary standard, despite missing a March 15 deadline set by President Joe Biden.
