Senate Committee Holding Hearing on Highway Trust Fund

Senate Committee Holding Hearing on Highway Trust Fund

April 14 the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) is holding a hearing entitled, “Long-term Solvency of the Highway Trust Fund: Lessons Learned from the Surface Transportation System Funding Alternatives Program and Other User-based Revenue Solutions, and How Funding Uncertainty Affects the Highway Programs.”

At the hearing, the Committee is expected to potentially discuss efforts to pilot and implement Vehicles-miles-travelled (VMT) fees and the future of truck-only taxes. Lawmakers have a September 30 deadline to reauthorize surface transportation programs and shore up the Highway Trust Fund, which faces insolvency because its main funding source, the motor fuels tax, has not increased since 1993.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee was the only Senate committee to advance a surface transportation reauthorization bill in the last Congress.
