Rail Shipper Fairness Act Reintroduced in Senate

Senator Tammy Baldwin reintroduced the Rail Shipper Fairness Act (S.4961) on December 3. If enacted into law, the legislation would require railroads to be more responsive to their customers by honoring their contractual obligations.

The bill would implement several reforms to improve rail service, rail competition, and reasonable rate standards. S.4961 would also seek to end unreasonable practices, such as prohibiting railroads from charging customers for fuel in a way that does not correlate with actual fuel costs, and would also examine the impact of precision scheduled railroading.

IWLA worked with allies in the Rail Customer Coalition (RCC) to have this legislation reintroduced and will advocate the legislation's advancement in the forthcoming 117th Congress as well. IWLA was listed as a supporter of the bill on Senator Baldwin's press release and a one-page summary. Senator Baldwin has also published a section-by-section summary of the Rail Shipper Fairness Act.
