Biden Picks Union-Backed Labor Secretary

January 8 President-elect Joe Biden announced that Boston Mayor Marty Walsh would be nominated to lead the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) as Secretary of Labor. Walsh is a former union president (Boston Building and Construction Trades Council). He had the support of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and the AFL-CIO’s two largest affiliates, the AFT and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees.

Depending on Wash’s confirmation timeline, he will likely prioritize developing an emergency temporary standard to protect workplaces from COVID-19, which is a top issue for the Biden Administration. He will also oversee the review/recission of labor-related regulations that were enacted during the Trump Administration.
