Problem Solvers Caucus Eye Fuel Tax Increase to Fund Infrastructure
The bipartisan, 58 member Problem Solvers Caucus released a new report setting forth a proposal the Caucus believes will address the dire need to rebuild and invest in U.S. infrastructure, specifically working to improve the country’s highways, roads and bridges, transit and railways, ports and airports, water and sewer systems, energy systems and the power grid, and broadband and communications networks.
The report outlines, but does not specifically recommend, pay-for options including closing the “tax gap”, incentivizing public-private partnerships, and increasing the federal gas tax. Though the Caucus stated specifically that it does not support any specific funding options at this time, the report provides a framework for what a bipartisan infrastructure proposal would prioritize.
The Problem Solvers Caucus is equally divided between Democrats and Republicans. The report received an endorsement from the Caucus; endorsements require the support of at least 75 percent of Caucus members.
