Congressional Committee Examines Antitrust Enforcement of Tech Firms

June 23 the House Judiciary Committee held a mark-up of several bills that seek to reinvigorate antitrust enforcement against tech companies and platforms, such as Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Google. Notably, the Committee passed one far-reaching bill, the Ending Platform Monopolies Act (H.R.3825), by a narrow bipartisan 21-20 vote.

H.R.3825 would prohibit the tech companies from running a business that competes with others on their platform or offers a service that businesses must buy to access the platform. For example, it would require Amazon to divest from its significant logistics services division.

It is unclear how the legislation will fare if brought up for a vote by the full U.S. House of Representatives or before the Senate. The bill has received substantial pushback from Republicans and Democrats, especially among states like California, where many tech companies are based.
